This paper explores the “build it and they will come” mentality that often results in market failure for technology startup businesses in their early stages of development, yet they are often brilliant technologically. To solve the paradox between product development and commercialization, this study investigates a strategic go-to-market (GTM) triad comprising of intensive customer validation, a clear market positioning and systematic market adoption. The study brings together all those ideas, as well as the Lean Startup model, the Diffusion of Innovations curve and the Jobs-to-Be-Done approach, and turns them into a stage-gate GTM roadmap, actionable and formulated to help founders avoid premature scaling; to help map engineering roadmap to buyer needs; and to help create a roadmap for predictable, sustainable growth. Furthermore, the results provide a set of guidelines for commercial readiness for VC and Angel Investors in their due diligence process.
